Baby Room Colors

That Can Be Soothing And Stimulating For Your Nursery!

Baby Wall Decal

Baby room colors define the setting and the mood and are therefore important to setting the overall ambiance of the nursery room for the mother/father and baby. Basically the baby room colours you choose can stimulate or soothe your senses and make for a more enjoyable baby room.

The selection of your baby nursery room color can be exciting but perhaps overwhelming with the abundance of color choices available. Basically color choices can be broken down into 2 categories – one being the sex of the baby and the other neutrality.

Of course if you decide to coordinate your baby nursery colors with the sex of the baby, then there are obvious color choices. Continue on below for more information on color choices for painting your baby's room.

Baby Boy And Baby Girl Colors

Baby Boy Colors

The most obvious baby room colors that come to mind are the blues. However in the market these days there are so many shades and tones of blue to choose from that your choice is unlimited. Your choices can range from a Disney blue to a very light powder blue to darker navy tones with lighter accent walls, which we will talk about later.

Baby Girl Colors

Pretty in pink! Baby girls are commonly associated with pink. However if you don't want to be so cliche, lilac is also a very popular and contemporary choice for baby girls. Like with blue, many tones and shades are available that again make for endless choices.

Neutral Colors

If you don't want to go with the traditional boy/girl baby room colors but want to have a room that is adaptable for both boys and girls then the neutral tone is the way to go. This is very popular and in the long run if you plan to have more children will save you big bucks, as you won't have to redecorate again and again to match the sex of your baby. It is also a good choice if you have more than one child perhaps sharing a room but are of different sex.

Neutral colors vary from cream to yellows, greens and beige. These are very soft colors and are very easy to work with when accessorizing your room to suit the sex of your baby. Due to the neutral tone of these colors almost all baby accessories whether baby room rugs, curtains or pictures will complement these colors.

Once you have decided on whether to go with the sex of the baby or to neutral paint colors, your next step will be to decide whether you want more than one tone of color on your nursery room walls.

Two Color Tones

If you have selected a strong main color then a good idea will be to have one wall that is lighter of the same shade or perhaps cream to accent the room and to give it more visual impact.

For example if you have selected a darker shade of blue for your nursery color paint then it would be a good idea to have one wall a lighter shade of the same blue or cream. This will lighten the mood of the room and make the room brighter.

Chair Rails

If your baby room has a chair rail separating the wall then the larger half of the wall should contain the main color and the lower half the secondary color.

When painting a room of this nature always keep your baby room colors in the same color spectrum. So if your baby room color choice is green, then choose perhaps a lighter green on top and a darker shade of green on the bottom. You always want to have the lighter shade on top and your darker shade on the bottom to keep your baby room bright and cheery. Another good way to go is to have neutral tones on the bottom such as cream. This will definitely accent your main color choice!

Color Hints

So what if you are one of those people who are having difficulty deciding on your baby room colors? What should you do!

Your choice of baby room color can be determined by various factors. If you already have baby bedding picked out or a favorite baby picture or baby room furniture or accessories, then your baby room color choice can come from them.

Pick out a color say from your baby bedding that is subtle i.e. the bedding is white with lilac flowers. Lilac could be your wall color. Since it is not the main color on the bedding but is chosen for the wall this will really highlight the lilac flowers on the baby bedding without it being "too much". To then lower or soften the lilac tone, curtains or shades and lamps can be white too.

Color Symbolism

Symbolism Of Colors

When a baby is born he/she has limited color perception, they can only see colors that are in high contrast to each other, for example black and white. Hence many newborns and young infant toys contain this color contrast.

As they age they start to distinguish the color red. As babies grow even older however color is a vital element in helping them learn as well as affecting them psychologically. Your choice in baby room colour may therefore play a role in your child's personality.

Remember!

Remember choosing your baby room colors is an exciting moment in time! And it's fun to think outside the box to come up with a great color scheme all your own that will personalize your baby's room even more. So always and I mean always grab a ton of the color swatches available at your local hardware stores (go to more than one) and start matching them up and your baby room colors will be a big hit with everyone.
